After reading Beni's post, and as well, Alex's (awallis) post, I decided to create this thread. Not sure how many people will actually contribute to it, but, I would be very interested to hear what different collectors' thoughts are on this mystery.
As a lot of you know, last year, I discovered a game that no one here knew, for sure, existed - NOA DK3. Some of us thought it must exist, while others believed it just ended up being omitted from the NOA production line. Yet, lo and behold, there it was, listed on ebay with a very attractive BIN, just a few moments before I decided to take a look at what new items were recently listed on ebay. Well, at the time I found it, I had been a member of ebay for 7 years, and having a reputation of finding some of the rarer stuff, as well as some really, true bargains, quite quickly, it took me 7 years to find that game. I joined ebay in 2004. However, I believe ebay has around since 1994/95, so, 9 or 10 years prior to when I joined. I know other, more veteran, collectors like Andy, Mike, Taki, Paul, Kevin etc... have been on ebay several years longer than I have, and in addition, have been collecting longer than I have. Yet, even they had not come across an NOA DK3 game. So, I think it's safe to say, that it took at least 12 years for one to show up on ebay and be noticed by one of us here on the forum.
So, fastforward to January 7th 2012, and let's talk about the three games that, production year-wise, would appear to fall into the category of "should exist in PS form", yet, haven't been found yet, or just plain were never made in PS form - Chef, Turtle Bridge & Egg.
What do we know about these games regarding their release? I mean, the general understanding is that Egg was released mainly (??) in Australia. Or was it "only" released in Australia? Do we know for certain that it was not available in the USA & Canada? My understanding is exactly this. That it was released in Australia, and possibly a few other coutries (New Zealand? Certain European countries??) But definitely not in Canada or the USA. And if this is in fact the case, then, we can essentially remove Egg from the possible games that exist in PS form list.
What about Chef and TB though? I've always found these games difficult to find in North America, but, available in abundance in Europe & Australia (TB) and Asia (Chef). Do you think there could be something there? Maybe they weren't really released in North America, I mean, look at this commercial:
This is a US commercial advertising Nintendo games for sale at Toys R Us, that was aired, according to the person that uploaded it, in 1983. The ad states that there are 14 games in all, and they show you all 14 games at the end of the ad. The games shown at the end of the ad (with their release dates in parenthesis) are:
Parachute (June 19th 1981)
Octopus (July 16th 1981)
Popeye (August 5th 1981)
Mickey Mouse (October 9th 1981)
Fire (December 4th 1981)
Fire Attack (March 26th 1982)
Snoopy Tennis (April 28th 1982)
Oil Panic (May 28th 1982)
Donkey Kong (June 3rd 1982)
DKJR (October 26th 1982)
Mickey & Donald (November 12th 1982)
Green House (December 6th 1982)
DKII (March 7th 1983)
Mario Bros. (March 14th 1983)
However, by March 14th 1983, as I mentioned in a previous post, Nintendo had released 25 games. 5 of these games were Silver Series games (Flagman, Ball, Vermin, Fire & Judge) and 3 were Gold Series games (Manhole, Helmet & Lion). And the other 3 games not shown in the ad are Egg, Chef & Turtle Bridge.
Now, as a child, I had never seen ANY Silver or Gold games in Canada (Specifically, Toronto - where I was born and raised). Nor do I recall ever seeing Chef, Turtle Bridge or Egg. The only Turtle Bridge game I saw was my grade-school friend's Turtle Bridge game, but, he was of Asian descent (from Hong Kong) and his dad brought him that Turtle Bridge game from one of his many trips out to the Far East.
With the exception of Fire Attack, every other game shown in that ad, I remember seeing and playing with as a child. Fire Attack I'm pretty sure I saw, but, never played it, or owned it, like the other games.
To me, this is interesting, because, not only did I not see an Egg, Chef or Turtle Bridge game that was sold in Canada, but, the release dates for these games fall within the range of games shown in the ad, yet, they're not part of the ad... Here are the release dates:
Chef (September 8th 1981)
Egg (October 9th 1981)
Turtle Bridge (February 1st 1982)
And if you want to see them in order:
Parachute (June 19th 1981)
Octopus (July 16th 1981)
Popeye (August 5th 1981)
Chef (September 8th 1981)
Egg (October 9th 1981)
Mickey Mouse (October 9th 1981)
Fire (December 4th 1981)
Turtle Bridge (February 1st 1982)
Fire Attack (March 26th 1982)
Snoopy Tennis (April 28th 1982)
Oil Panic (May 28th 1982)
Donkey Kong (June 3rd 1982)
DKJR (October 26th 1982)
Mickey & Donald (November 12th 1982)
Green House (December 6th 1982)
DKII (March 7th 1983)
Mario Bros. (March 14th 1983)
Why would these games not be shown in a US made commercial that shows other games that were released before Chef, and after Turtle Bridge? I think the answer to this question may shed some light on the mystery surrounding the existence of these games in PS form.
And while I've already eliminated the possibility of a PS Egg existing, (as have most other collectors here) I'm beginning to also slide Chef and Turtle Bridge over to the "does not exist in PS form" column, as, it just seems to be the case based on everything I've listed above. I hope I'm wrong, as I would really love to find PS versions of Chef & Turtle Bridge, and I'm just dying to see what the cartoonish artwork will look like (Maybe it will look similar to Mr. Cole's creations.....). I guess time will tell.
What do you guys think? Does anyone have any observations they've made on this topic, that they would like to share? It would be a very good discussion point, and who knows? Maybe something comes out of this that puts more certainty as to which column these games should be in.
