Well, I think it's pretty significant. After all, every other game we've seen on the back of our G&W boxes depict the games exactly as they actually are (colour-wise), yet, this one is completely different! Not even close to the same colour it actually is. Some of my boxes make MM look like it might be orange, to me, that is insignificant, but blue??? That's a big difference that you can't attribute to fading or shading issues....
I don't know what the significance of the Blue Mickey is, but, I do think it was done intentionally, and I find it very intriguing as to why.
Maybe the BM boxes exist on low-serialed WS games??? Or, maybe the intention was to make MM Blue rather than Red??
So far, it seems that BMs have appeared on Chef boxes, Parachute boxes and Octopus boxes. All three of these game were released BEFORE MM was released, so, maybe there is something to this hypothesis that the colour for the MM WS game was originally, supposed to be blue!
Runepune, Damo and Ash, what are the serials on your Blue Mickey games? The Chef game box with the Blue Mickey that I posted above, has serial:
05465125
AC
PS Does anyone else have any Blue Mickey boxed WS games???

Oops, I was a little confused as I thought you said that serial was on your game box. The game serials are:
Parachute: 05833017 Chef: 05486989
Hmm, pretty close to your Chef serial, Aris.

Aris, I'm pretty sure I've seen other 'wrongly coloured' games on the back of some boxes. I don't think it's just Mickey mouse. I still have most of my wide screens, I'll check them. But Multi screens had game pics on the back as well, people should be checking them as well.

Might be on to something here... Ash - Oops, my fault, I can see how you thought I meant box serials. LOL! Yours are low too. Hmmm... can't be this easy and straightforward, can it??? Thanks for your serials too. Andy - Well, the only other wrongly-coloured game(s) I have seen would be the orange MM (which I already wrote about earlier) and Chef. Chef looks almost purple on the back of my Egg game box, but, when I grab my boxed Chef box, and compare the the pic of Chef on the back of my Egg box, to the pic of Chef on the front of the Chef box, they're the same. So, maybe that burgundyish colour is difficult to show up on a gold-coloured background? Yeah, let me know which other ones are different Andy, b/c I'm thinking Ash might have found something pretty interesting here!!! AC

One boxed Chef, bought on ebay from a japanese seller, got the blue MM (exactly the same picture as the one Aris showed). Box stamped on the big flag with 00010380 and game serial 05593829.
(talking about it, I just noticed that I don't have the instructions for this game... "message in a bottle... tadam..." ;D)

Hmm.. all serials seem to be in the 054xxxxx-058xxxxx range and come from Japan. Interestingly, all serials come from games released prior to Mickey Mouse and can be found on Parachute, Octopus, Popeye and Chef games, isn't that right?

On my Parachute & Popeye boxes, MM has his traditional red color, but I cannot confirm the origins of the games. I also didn't check if there's a serial on the box and I don't have my games serial list under my hand now (my collection is upstairs, and even with my fair home network installation, I haven't shared all the docs that I should for my convenience ;D). If needed, I can have a look tomorrow.

Michael I'm not sure if we've verified the existence of a "Blue Mickey" Popeye yet, although it would certainly make sense. But looking at your FAQ it seems there is a blue Mickey on the back of the 3rd edition Popeye box, but it's hard to see.

But looking at your FAQ it seems there is a blue Mickey on the back of the 3rd edition Popeye box, but it's hard to see. Yes, this is interesting indeed..... I just checked my games again, and all of my serials are higher than our hypothesized Blue Mickey range. My lowest serial on games that preceded MM in production was like a 079xxxxx. I think my theory that perhaps MM was initially going to be produced with a blue housing might have some merit after all!!! Looking at the release dates, Chef was released almost exactly a month month before MM was released (Sept. 8th 1981 vs Oct. 9th 1981) so, I guess they must have changed their mind somewhere during that month! I also checked my database, and yeah Parachute, Octopus, Popeye and Chef all have serials that start below the 058xxxxx mark. My lowest MM serial is 063xxxxx. My lowest Egg is 060xxxxx and my lowest Fire serial is 086xxxxx. It would be funny if we saw an Egg box with a Blue Mickey on it, but, I highly doubt it. They were released on the same date, and it would appear the obvious takes over here. i.e. they thought of making MM blue, but, when they ran into trouble releasing MM in Australia, they created Egg and made it blue instead! Ash, IMO, the pic of the 3rd edition Popeye box in Mike's FAQ definitely has a Blue Mickey on it! Hey collectors! Can you check the back of your ("gold-coloured") Wide Screen boxes for a Blue Mickey? And if you find one, can you confirm what the game serial number is? I know the possibility will always exist that games might have been swapped, but, for the most part, the serials should be what we think they should be, though, we don't know the bottom of the range, I'm sure the top of the range will be lower than the lowest Egg serial I have, so, it could be up to 059xxxxx. It's only a hypothesis but maybe they decided against releasing Mickey Mouse with a blue case since they would release Fire with a blue case as well after a couple of months and decided to change it to red instead to avoid confusion.. The reason I'm saying this, is because game case colours vary a lot between games and Nintendo probably did this deliberately so that any kid can instantly identify a game by its colour..

But then why continue to release egg with the very same colour?
No, the 2 blues are not the same but I don't think that they changed the colour because they didn't want another blue. They changed it because they had to release 2 games in the end, and had to come up with 2 colours.
I can't get my head around the dates, though, surely it would have took more than a month for them to change their minds and change the printing of boxes and the production of cases! We need more boxes and serial numbers I think!

We need more boxes and serial numbers I think! Andy Good point Andy! This thought crossed my mind as well (they released Egg in blue anyway). This is the sad part of this forum. With all the members here, you'd think people would be more involved in providing information such as this, to help us better understand the things about G&W that we're not sure of, or just plain, don't know. But, other than the same old handful of members, no one else seems to want to post anything. And I really have no idea why. Anyway, I saw an auction on ebay for a boxed Popeye game, as well as a boxed Octopus game from the same seller. I inquired about the serials and the Popeye was a 088xxxxx number, but the Octopus was a 049xxxxx number. I then sent another question asking about the back of the box, and whether either had a Blue Mickey on the back. Well, neither game had a Blue Mickey on the back, and I overlooked the fact that the Octopus they had for sale, had English instructions, so, even though it's a low serial, I think we pretty much determined that the Blue Mickey will only be on boxes from Japan, and hence, will come with Jap. instructions.
