Something I've wondered for quite a while, but never mentioned it. I've noticed that the design on the box of many of the older games (those boxes with a picture of the game on the front/back) the games show a certain "example" display. What I particularly noticed is the similarities with the score displayed (with some minor variations; some are a mystery!) . Here's a list of what's displayed: AC-01 - 3880 FL-02 - 0:35 MT-03 - 398 RC-04 - 368IP-05 - 18 5 8 32 MH-06 - 328CN-07 - 328LN-08 - 328PR-21 - 328OC-22 - 328PP-23 - 328FP-24 - 328MC-25 - 328EG-26 - 328FR-27 - 328TL-28 - 6328ID-29 - 6328SP-30 - 6328OP-51 - 368DK-52 - 368DM-53 - 368GH-54 - 368JR-55 - 368MW-56 - 368LP-57 - 368TC-58 - 368PB-59 - 36800 CJ-71 - 358 (back) - 2:23pm clock (front) CM-72 - 358 (back) - 3:16am clock (front) SM-73 - 368PG-74 - 368 (back) - 3:28m clock (front) SM-91 - 368 (back) PG-92 - 368 (back) CJ-93 - 358TB-94 - 358 (back) - 3:28pm clock (front) DC-95 - (help me out here, people!) MK-96 - 368 (back) - 3:26pm clock (front) BU-201 - 410 UD-202 - 20 BX-301 - 35 40 AK-302 - 31:28 HK-303 - 6 8 YM-801 - 53 DR-802 - 18 BF-803 - 138 To be honest I don't have a good reason for posting this info, but thought it may be of at least some interest. Are the numbers they use for the display subliminally appealing to us, perhaps? I see a lot of 3's and 8's in there, but I don't know if they hold any meaning. Is there a psychologist/numerologist in the house? pulse8

Yep, I think the theory was that these numbers are lucky. (To the Japanese, anyway) Perhaps Baluce could confirm this?

I have been searching for more information and i found this: "The Japanese don't like the number 4 and 9 because of their pronunciation. Four is pronounced "shi" which is the same pronunciation as death. Nine is pronounced "ku" which has the same pronunciation as agony or torture.
There are many hospitals that don't have these numbers as the room number or even the floor number. The Japanese also dislike Friday the13th, though many of them are not Christians. There are no seats with numbers 4, 9 and 13 on passenger planes of the All Nippon Airways.
On the other hand, the number 8 is considered a lucky number. This is because of the shape of the kanji character for eight. The two strokes are wider at the bottom, suggesting a better time or better things to come in the future. "
From: japanese.about.com/blqow7.htm
I also found this:
"The numbers, especially 3 and 7, are lucky numbers in Japan, and until the 20th century Japan was a thoroughly feudal nation with a higher childhood mortality rate. Since bacterial pathology was then unknown to them they often blamed death on evil spirits, and when the kids became 3, 5, and 7 years old they thanked the gods for their children's good health. "
From: "http://www.thejapanfaq.com/celebrations.html"In my opinion, the designers tried to avoid the unlucky numbers and maybe, put some lucky numbers. As you can see only SpitBall Sparky (BU-201 - 410) has number 4 on it, so I think the reason for the 368 was more about not putting the unlucky numbers (4,9). PS: Oh, and for the DC-95 number, i looked it in Torsten site: www.intheattic.co.uk/mickey_mouse1.htm and its 368

Excellent information selkeni, well done! I have to say that I don't remember the previous discussion Lio mentioned but I'm sure he's right.

Interesting the it appears america couldnt care less, with all the PS boxes having "bad" numbers.... however interestingly they do contain the 8 and the 3, but then you have 4's and 9's and 2's so it's all a bit (I did not bother to check the MS's) PR-21 8:36 OC-22 8:34 PP-23 8:39 MC-25 8:24 FR-27 8:34 ID-29 ? SP-30 8:39 -B

I re-read Selkeni's post which is interesting There're similiarities between Japanese and Chinese (Kanji literally means Chinese Characters). For example, 4 sounds like death in Chinese as well so is bad. 3 and 8 are good in both Japanese and Chinese but for different reasons. But 9 means longevity in Chinese and is good. Btw, the building I live in doesn't have the 4th, 14th, and 24th floors

Funny how the battery compartments for silver series games are on the opposite side to gold/wide/multi series. Just thought I'd mention that... pulse8
