Hello all! Well, I'm posting here because I finally got my Game & Watch collection started this month! Woo! A boxed Donkey Kong multi-screen in lovely condition is my first G&W (and, like the original poster, I probably overpaid for it). Like the utter newbie I am, I already have a couple of questions that I didn't feel deserved a whole new thread, so any help would be gratefully received!: 1. My new G&W came without batteries; I assume it's fine just to buy standard modern Maxell LR44 batteries from eBay? I'm sure it's okay, but I don't want to damage my game if the LR44s have changed in ... some way. *reads back* God, that's a dumb question. Please bear with me! 2. I'm off to a car boot sale tomorrow; are these good hunting grounds, or has eBay killed them off for G&W collectors? And finally, a link to something I saw a while ago. Some of you probably saw this guy's insane Nintendo collection, as it did the rounds on the usual blogs, but if not, prepare to be horribly, horribly jealous: www.figure.fm/post/en/6809/My+Otacool+Room+repost.htmlThe reason I post this is because I was looking at the other day, and yes, he has a complete G&W collection, but also FOUR Mario YM-901s! There may even be more, but I could see four in total. Egads. Anyway, thanks for any help you guys can offer on my above questions! Best, Chris

Hey Chris, welcome (again!) and well done on your purchase! As long as you're happy with it, don't think about the price too much! You'll learn in the process about prices and how much each item is worth in the present market. Btw, LR44 batteries or AG13 as they call them now will work fine in your game! You can also use SR44 but they're probably more expensive since they last longer.
I'm not sure about boot sales - I couldn't find any games this way locally but other collectors had better luck in the past so it probably depends on the area..

Hi again, Michael, and thanks for the answers. I just ordered 20 cheap LR44 batteries. I also just got back from my second car boot sale in as many weeks - fruitless again, unfortunately, though I always enjoy those things. How did yours go, pheldge?

3 today : nothing...
I must say that I was not on the places very early. But no G&W, and only a few retro consoles and games. And moreover, prices were crazy (for boot sales, I mean). Looks like each time people find any game older than one year, they think it's a collector...
But I recognize that it's always pleasant to wander there in the sunny sunday morning, take a snack and a beer, see some pretty girls, ... ;D
Edit : don't take too cheap batteries. They're often of poor quality. By experience, I can tell you that it's worth paying a little more and take for example SR44 batteries.

Hey Guys, I have been reading a little bit over the last couple of days and stumbled across this website which has helped me make the decision to start collecting! I've had a think about it, and because I plan on building my collection over the long term I want to pick up the highest quality G&W that I can. I do have a couple of questions if you guys don't mind answering: I assume that brand new in box is going to be next to impossible to collect? So would attempting to collect mint in complete box would be a better option? My fondest G&W memory as a kid was the Super Mario Brothers I would really appreciate any suggestions and ideas, also any great bargins i should look at Thanks guys looking forward to getting to know you guys

I assume that brand new in box is going to be next to impossible to collect? So would attempting to collect mint in complete box would be a better option? Welcome and good luck with your collection!! Your goal is a very difficult one. It is possible to get almost all 60 games in new/near new condition but you will have to be extremely patient and have very big pockets!! Nowadays such games are very difficult to find. Your best bet would be to get most games from other collectors who always keep their items well stored. You can't easily trust Ebay sellers, most of them are scammers and others are just ignorant. You have to ask a lot of questions and don't believe the photos, they can be manipulated! Collecting mint games in complete boxes is a better option money-wise although you will still struggle to find some of the earlier items (silver series) in mint condition. Whatever option you choose, we're here to help! Michael

Hi Michael, Thanks for the warm welcome! I have been thinking about it more and more and ultimately I would like this hobby to last me quite a long time so I figure I will go for brand new in box, i don't have massively deep pockets but i figure that given the rarity i should be able to accumulate enough funds in-between the only downside is I won't be able to enjoy playing them Maybe I'll collect bnib and some below average loose models as well so I don't miss out? So aside from this great resource is there anywhere else that I should be looking for collectors selling bnib? Thanks!

I'm afraid online auctions sites are your only friends right now. Ebay, tradera and yahoo japan are some of the ones collectors use. Yahoo japan is probably worth watching since japanese sellers are usually honest and they try to preserve their games in good condition. If you wish to bid in yahoo japan auctions though, you'll have to use a 3rd party bidding service like rinkya..
Getting a few loose games is a good idea in order to appreciate the games better because - let's face it - you wouldn't want to touch your mint games a lot let alone playing with them!

Hello, everyone -- I've been lurking here for awhile, but I decided to join when I picked up my very first G&W.
Well, not really my first...my first G&W was Silver Fire, which I got in 1980/81 or so from my dad (who worked in advertising at the time and picked it up at the annual NYC Toy Fair). Man, I loved that game!
After that my memory gets a bit hazy -- I recall either playing and possibly owning Gold Fire, Donkey Kong I & II & Jr., Greenhouse, Oil Panic, Mario's Cement Factory, Mario Bros. and Panorama Popeye. I'm pretty sure I stopped getting them around the time the NES came out.
Sadly, I have no idea what happend to these games. Did they break? Did some school mate steal them? Did my mom actually throw them away? I wish I could remember!
So, I turned 40 this year and decided to become a 10-year-old again. I couldn't find a Silver Fire that appealed to me, so I picked up a boxed, used Gold Fire, which I'm enjoying very much.
I've made a list of 12 other games I'd like to pick up. The list is based 95% on nostalgia and 5% on curiosity. I've decide to go for boxed, gently used examples, as I believe that's what my budget can handle and I already collect alot of other silly things that eat up my discretionary income.
(Plus, I won't feel like I'm destroying their value every time I play them!)
Now, I hope you'll permit me to ask a few noob questions, so I can get a better handle on the hobby. I'll start off with the really dumb ones first...
1) When not in use, would you recommend storing the batteries separate from the game?
2) Just how fragile are the battery covers?
3) What's the average condition of a G&W box these days? C-4? C-5? What grade would be considered the bare minimum for a high-grade example?
4) I appreciate the bad Ebay sellers list. Is there also a good Ebay sellers list somewhere?
Well, that's it for now. I'm sure I'll come up with more. Thanks, everybody!
