I've moved this discussion here so we don't hijack Florent1980's thread any more Looks like others agree with me about the hype, or whatver you want to call it. The 'hype' I was referring to was all the backpatting whenever somebody won a bidding war for a ridiculously priced PS game. And all the congratulations when it was added to a collection thread. Sure, they are rare games, and I guess it's nice to own them, and I can understand people congratulating, I did it myself, but it's clear to me that if this forum didn't exist, prices would have been much lower. The 'kudos' is one part, but maybe discussions about who owns what and who wants what made members aware of what others were prepared to pay when a new game came up. I think the evidence proving my point is clear to see. Nobody cares about PS games at the moment, partly because many of the serious collectors have got what they want, and also partly because of the drop in members/member interest here, and look what's happened to the prices, sellers can barely give them away. Now, I know that some members are wanting to protect their 'investments' so might be reluctant to discuss this, but I wonder what people think about the near future of PS prices. Do you think that we have hit the 'real' value of these games now? I mean, PS are currently going for about 3x the price of a normal boxed game in the same condition. That price is obviously out of synch with their rarity compared to normal games, but I think the prices are quite sensible now. Obviously we don't know what will happen in the more distant future (several years) so I'm just talking about the next year or two. I think prices will remain as low as they are. The only thing that can change is if 2 new hardcore PS collectors come along at the same time! Andy

d**n! :-) With such thread I will have to cancel my Green house which is on ebay right now.... Here is what I think on that subject.
I think people that can afford PS for the moment have purchased everything they wanted and that the remaining PS for sale does not find the same echo as every potential buyer for the moment again is allready an owner.
Therefore I think it is a question of time and that a new craze will come when other people will have interest in game and watch. Taki and crew will not be anymore the bidders but new generation of game and watch collectors will come (in fact just like me! :-)
Every market act like a wave and therefore it does not go up as is. I am sure that video games or retrogaming as we say has still a long way to go but this is not a painting, there is no real price guideline so threfore some people (JUST LIKE ME AGAIN!) will have to face a loss if they want to get back quickier than expected their money. ButI do not have big problem with that because unlike what Nelson said to me, I am not a bad persone only driven by money, a "money maker" in game and watch, I am a regular collector trying ot limit its huge costs.

It would be interesting to see what other members think about this. My opinion is probably known to everybody and I stated it again in florent's thread.
Just one thing to add in order to avoid in misunderstandings: in no way did forum members or me tried to inflate the prices "artificially" in whatever way or there was never an organized effort to keep prices up by collectors in here. Rare items are more desirable. For whatever reasons users always comment on such deals (being it admiration, jealousy, bad or good criticism). I've always tried to keep a neutral stance on prices, I've created threads for cheap and expensive items and always commented on both.

Forgive the double post but there's special reason.. Here's the related posts in florent's thread:

That's very true, I lost around AU$800 on four PS games when I was into them last year or so. I think the days when your average PS would fetch US$500+ are well and truley over.
Looking on Ebay now I can see a Popeye and Mario for AU$279 each Buy it Now and there's still no interest!!!

I can't remember a time when the average ps would fetch $500 or more. Only the rarer ps games would fetch so much. The average price for the ps snoopy, dkjr, dk, dk2, pinball was around $300.
You can't just make money buying and selling in a period of a few weeks time because the prices fluctuate so much that you'll probably lose your money.

When Paul, Nelson and Mattijs were collecting (at the same time) the average prices were all well over $500, I remember a c5 Pinball selling for $650, a Snoopy Tennis (missing one flap) for $910 and a Popeye for $970. I wouldn't really classify any of them rare either. Re: Help me finish the 60!Please! :-) Post by mpanayiotakis on Mar 18, 2007, 10:32am
Yes, but that wasn't really the norm for more than a few months time and for more than a few items! The average was a lot lower than that. I got my ps snoopy for $350 and my ps popeye for $390 and that was nearly 3 years ago!!
Guys, you have to remember that as time passes by more and more people learn about Ebay and discover that the games they have stashed somewhere are worth some money.. The drop in prices we've been observing the past few years is not only because of the lack of hardcore collectors but also because of the abudance of games now offered.

--------------- Re: Help me finish the 60!Please! :-) Post by andycole on Yesterday at 6:57am
I think that the drop in hardcore collectors is related to the abundance of games. A lot of the people who are/were interested in PS have now got what they want. But some people who haven't bought loads of games, but were once on the lookout, have lost interest, even though there are many games available now. Myself included.
I've said it many times but I'll say it again; hype created on this forum drove up prices. People liked the kudos that came with winning & owning PS games. Now that there are many fewer active members here, the kudos has gone, and now PS seem like just another G&W in a pretty dress (well, for me, anyway) and even at today's prices, I am not tempted to buy any.
I feel sorry for those people who spent thousands and will never get their money back, not for many years anyway. I'm really glad that I was only ever tempted once.

Ok, I know this isn't the right thread to discuss this but what hype Andy ? PS games are a lot fancier than regular releases and that's a fact. They are also rarer and only a few people own them. That's a fact too. Those two facts alone make ps games more desirable and that's what drove the prices up - not the hype. Why do mint games end so higher than other auctions ? Is it the hype ? No, it's because people want to own nice items..
I'll try and create another thread for this discussion tomorrow..

I think there was a hype for a bit, even i got caught up and bought a DK II PS and bid on (but lost) a Mario Bros PS, now im just not as excited over them, there doesnt seem to be the awe factor over PS games that there was a little while back. Re: Help me finish the 60!Please! :-) Post by Fox on Today at 3:24am
Andy and Ric both hit the nail on the head, I also believe the hype is starting to fade along with the kudos which used to come with winning/buying/owning a PS.
The boxart is quite attractive, yet can spending hundreds more on a different style of box really be justified?
---------------- Re: Help me finish the 60!Please! :-) Post by florent1980 on Today at 3:42am
I think the main driver is rarity not the beauty of the box. These pocketsize are still the rarest game and watch to be purchased on the planet but maybe collectors who could spend that money allready own them and other collector can just watch those sale without bidding... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wasn't accusing anyone of artificially driving up prices. I was just commenting that the price rises were an effect of discussions on this forum, coincidentally, not by design. I did say that I thought some members might be reluctant to continue this discussion to protect their investments, and I wouldn't blame anyone for that. I'd probably do the same if I'd spent thousands of dollars on PS games. So, anyway, what you're saying, Mike, is that you think prices are more or less what they've always been, except for the rise in the last couple of years due to some big spenders? Andy

Hmm.. I've been collecting for 5 years now. I observed a big rise 3 years ago and it subsided a year after. This coincides with Paul's entry to the community but he wasn't the only one spending big bucks back then. I think the current slump is because a few big-time collectors decided to sell (so they aren't spending any money any more) and a lot of rare items appeared for sale. The problem with that, as opposed to the years before is that nowadays a lot of people are selling game&watch games using Ebay. So there are more opportunities for collectors and therefore one can find nice items for a small sum of money. Rare items can't be absorbed out of the market fast enough today.
I think that as soon as these items leave the market for good, the prices will rise again. Note also that all the collectors that decided to sell had paid a good amount of money for their items. These are more prone to sell quickly because they know what they have spent and it doesn't help when other needs arise.
I think we're concentrating on prices too much though. I know that people don't want to lose money but they shouldn't expect to get their money back only a few months after buying stuff. The market was never very stable and you can still see that every day!

I don't think my PS price list has helped the matter, well actually it probably has, people are certainly sticking to more of the average price on my list, trouble is they may be assuming their going to get a c10 item for that average price. what I've been noticing is an average c7 item is allways below the average on the list, this in turn reduces the average.. and so on....
I'd be interesed to know how many people are using the list when purchasing, because I've had comments from most PS owners and buyers that they use the list all the time...
I know I allways try and get the best game I can for about the average on my list, if the item is c7 ish etc, then I wont pay the average, maybe others are doing the same.....
One of my aims for the list to stabalise the prices, it may be helping.....

Well, I think interest in Pocketsize games is not what it used to be. I have a Mario Bros on offer in the Buy-Sell-Trade forum and I haven't received a single reaction on it. I'm sure that a couple years back, people would have sold their firstborn for it... It's true that There was a hype and backpatting... Hey, I can vividly remember the excitement when a new game turned up... The PS packing is just so much better, nicer, more colorful... And a lot rarer than the regular versions of course... But is it "worth" the astronomical ammounts that were paid for some of them... I can't tell... At the moment it doesn't look like it, but like said above, wait til the next wave of "gotta have it" collectors comes around... I know for a fact that at the time I was actively collecting PS games were out of my league... Hey, I think right now they would stil be... Even with the current pricedrop... Greetings, Kevin.

Kevin, a lot of ps mario bros games has appeared for sale the past year so it's understandable that not many people have shown interest for it. I'm interested in upgrading mine but at the moment I've got a lot of expenses upgrading my car.

I think a lot of people do refer to your list, as well as a couple of others that are available on the net. I certainly did even before I started to collect, I wanted to get an idea of what I was letting myself in for!

hey, i never made a comment on this thread! now i seen it, i shall quality will always out perform the average, that's why there have still been some big prices seen lately, but I agree in general prices are down, but it's not just ps, it's all g&w. it's like stocks and shares, up and down if you are in for the long haul, it's not a real issue, if you need to get out quick, then that's an issue! and Andy, you don't have to feel sorry for me fella, I don't feel sorry for you because you don't have a PS collection
