Hi everybody. This may be a very silly question for you hardcore collectors, but anyway: I just rediscovered Super Mario Bros in its Mini Classics version, and there's one thing that puzzles me: If the alarm starts when you're playing a game and you have 3 extralifes, or you have 2 extralifes and are just going to start a new level - in both cases there are 3 Marios on the top left of the screen - then a symbol appears above the fire flame of Koopa everytime the fire flame is visible. If there are 0-2 Marios on the top of the screen there's just the fire flame. It's hard to see what this symbol really should be, maybe it's smoke. However - what's the point with this? Maybe it symbolizes some kind of protection from the fire? I'd really like to know...

Hello Mr Love and welcome to this forum. I have absolutely no idea whatsoever about what you're talking! But then again; I just collect g&w's and hardly ever play them (except for a few). sAner

Well, I'm quite sure it's in the "new wide screen" version of Super Mario Bros (and maybe the Crystal Screen version too) since the Mini Classics is just a replication of that. Aren't you guys interested in the actual games and not just the serial numbers? However I've made a scan, although it's hard to make a good one. The red arrow points on whatever it is above the fire flame. (I also made a green arrow, pointing at whatever Mario is holding - is it a flower?) If you guys know about some other Game & Watch forum not dedicated to collecting please tell me.

I can't discern what it is.. Anyone else ? I suppose that someone who knows more about the super mario bros games might know something about it. Anyway, this is NOT a "collecting g&w" forum only. Anyone can write anything regarding anything related to the games. We can create a high-score list, discuss about game levels, gameplay or whatever. This board is not restricted to threads related to collecting although it seems this way because most of us just collect the games and never play with them.. (no time! ) Michael

Hi Mr Love (welcome to the forum by the way ), The same symbol appears on the new wide screen version (YM-105) and it does look like smoke. If you ask me, it's a graphic added to represent the 3rd Mario LCD getting "burnt" by the firing flame from the Koopa. Obviously this has no affect on the game and you don't loose a life. It's sort of a comical thing Nintendo added to the game. /QJ

About the green arrow, I think Mario makes a V with his fingers

Nice with a symbol that appears on such rare occasions, I wonder if some other G&W has that too... However I at first thought "maybe it's some kind of warp thing!" but I tried everything and nothing happended... Todbrowning: That sounds reasonable too - thanks!
