I thought I'd start a new thread here as there's a discussion been going on in the top 50 list and I'm not sure everybody reads that regularly (I know I don't so I missed Jon's post about selling up)
I was thinking that it's virtually inevitable that collectors give in to the need for money and decide to sell up or partially sell up. I previously said that I'd never sell up unless I REALLY needed the money and that's still true even though I'm thinking of selling some bits.
I don't REALLY need the money so I dont want to sell off all my collection, I like the 60/60 status, not just as a status on this forum but it gives me a good feeling. So, how to make some money and still keep all the games? Sell off the boxes! It's the games I like, the design and the playing, even though I never have time to play them
It got me thinking about the different ways people who have sold off parts of their collection go about it.
Pieter sold most of his games but kept the ones dear to him and concentrated on donkey kong. That makes him happy because he loves donkey kong and he gets to afford all those lovely pocketsize boxes!
Jon is clearing out anything not NIB and the tabletops. (Good move as the tabletops really stick out like a sore thumb, don't they?) That makes Jon happy because all his remaining games are NIB and fit in a small space.
My idea of selling off boxes was the result of a lot of thought about what I like about collecting the games. Having them all and seeing the lovely design is what I like most and the boxes don't really hold much importance to me. Maybe if I had all 60 boxes I'd feel different but my life has changed and that'll never happen. That has just made me realise, the birth of Jon's child might have had something to do with it, eh, Jon?
I don't know what I expect people to say in this thread, I'm just airing my views, not really asking for feedback, but feel free.
Last thing, I said I may be tempted by offers on my games, and I get lots of PM's asking how much I want for X Y and Z. MAKE ME AN OFFER! I have lost track of the values of the games so I'll have to find out through ebay before suggesting prices. Make me an offer in the meantime and you might tempt me and get yourself a bargain.
Andy.

Heya Andy, A first short reply from my side (the weather is great here in NL, I have a day off and I want to test my new Sigma lens ...!). I think you are right in many ways. I also think the birth of a child and other major happenings (such as a (planned) mariage) has a lot to do with people's choice for selling up (partly). It's not a coincendance (I think) that QJ sold all his boxes when his daughter was born and the same goes for Jon. I will NEVER abandon collecting g&w's forever (Mike P. doesn't believe me and says I will sell up eventually! ) as I like the games I now own so much and also; the g&w comunity as a whole is really dear to me. More later ... Regards, Pieter

It seems that all old collectors abandon collecting at some point. Andy is one of the oldest and he decided to sell some of his possesions. I understand him. I feel a bit like him nowadays although I'm not really ready on selling anything yet (and I probably won't for some time unless I need the money).
I guess we all get bored at some point. As with many things, the initial enthusiasm wears off at some point and we look for other things to fill in this void. And this isn't helped by the fact that most collectors we knew abandoned collecting. People who have other things in their minds (newborn babies, major purchases, etc) are more prone to give up as collecting involves a lot of searching and dealing which in turn require a lot of free time.
Anyway, I don't understand why we're doing this in the private forum. I think we should move this thread to the main forum if that's ok with all of you and Andy.

Sure, Mike, move it out to the general area. We spoke before about what makes an 'active collector' and I'm not sure whether I can be called active if there is little chance of me buying more games, but I certainly wouldn't say that I have abandoned collecting. As long as I own at least 2 G&W you can call it a collection, and me a collector, if not an active one. I'm still not 101% sure I want to sell anything yet, which is why I said 'tempt me' and I've had at least 1 very tempting offer, so you'll have to watch this space (or whatever space this thread moves to... ) Andy

Hi guys, It's been a while but this thread's right up my alley... I've thought about quitting collecting G&W's several times before as I know there's more usefull things that can be done with the money that would come from it... I hope the day doesn't come that I'll have to sell my collection because I need the money... My first child was born eight weeks ago and I'm still collecting... I guess being at 54/60 makes it more difficult to find games at a bargain and that's what made me lose interest a bit... I still check eBay but I get outbid time after time... I still read the posts here once a week to keep up with things... I've started collecting HotWheels now too... Oh well, just another collection... But with this one you can pick up nice pieces for at at only €1.50... I've picked up some G&W's at those prices but those were rare bargains... I still stop by the displaycabinet every evening before I go to bed so I don't think I'll stop collecting G&W's soon... I just need a new impulse to get the fire back... Greetings, Kevin.

I think I'm in the same boat, I'm hovering around 55, and the last 5 are a real pain in the butt. actually theres really one 3 that are rare, but I want all 5 at a resonable price... I too look at the display cabinet every day as it's placed promadently in the hall.
But I also can think of a few reasons to sell up, reduce the morgage, get me my Mazda MX5... I guess we will have to see what happens when winter sets in over here and the MX5 prices drop.

I am pretty new to collecting ( I only really started around October ) and I only have a relatively small collection (27/60). But with a child coming in June I have already slowed down in my buying and thought about selling some stuff that I have, as I sometimes think that the money that I have tied up in my collection could be put to better use. I am having real difficulty choosing what way to go with my collection ,I mean I will never reach 60/60 so I dont know whether just to focus on a specific type of game. I also know that if the wife ever realised just what sort of money was tied up in games I am sure she would have something to say about it. I can say one thing though I will not ever sell them all but I cannot say that I will always have as many as I have now but as Andy says if you have 2 games you have a collection and in no way am I bored with collecting as I do enjoy trying to find a bargain so we will have to see.

Hi All, I know what you mean. I've been on that crossroad a couple off times too. But every time I was thinking about selling, I found a real cheap rare game. The only problem is, you need to spend some time finding them. Mostly you'll find them hidden or with a buy now. Recently I bought a boxed flagman on Ebay for 50 euro! I also had that with 3 other rare games and now I only need judge to get the 59. I don't believe in the 901S as a seperate game, so for me it's only 59 to collect. What I want to say is: If you can't or don't want to spend a lot of money to finish your collection, you need to put some time in it. Isn't that the fun part of collecting? Finding that rare item for a good price? It gives you more satisfaction, although it will take more time. May the force be with you all, René

We're drifting onto another topic here, getting games cheaply, which is fine by me because it's my speciality. Most of my games were bought for WAY less than their market value, and many were bought for a pound or less at car boot sales. even ebay can bring up bargains if you look for the hidden ones and the BINs. Buy the games you have already if they're a bargain, and then when you re-sell you can afford to put the money towards the game you want. So, don't get depressed about the price of the games you have left to get, there are ways. But if you start thinking about the value of your collection, then you're in trouble....especially if you have something else you would like to spend the money on. Andy.

I have decided to take the plunge, and I will be selling off items from my collection in order of least wanted until I reach enough money to obtain my MX5. I will post some pics in my collection forum tonight, and anyone is welcome to make offers. I won't be selling it all and I'll still be collecting, I'm just culling my collection. :-)
Hence that is Y there are 3 silvers listed from me atm on ebay.
up next I will have a popeye pano boxed and a dkjr pano boxed, both CGL.

Well although I have had a short lived experience of Game & Watch collecting, which was pretty intense at first, I will be selling part of my collection. What with work pressures and long hours I don't really have spare time to search ebay regularly at the moment or make valuable contributions to the forum. Another factor is the need for money for a deposit for a house which as people will know is expensive in England, and I am also having to sell my car (Mitsibishi FTO if any one is interested ) So I will not be giving up completly yet and I am selling my less favourite items first and then I see how I go. Well, Im selling up nearly all my G&W I have left at the moment to cover a new car, since the other one was written off and is undrivable after a accident.
I dont think I will be making a return anything soon (Or ever), but would like a certain item or 2 just to top my collection experience off (A very nice boxed mickey pano with instructions would do the trick, since its my favourite game, and a very nice boxed donkey kong since it was the one and ONLY game I owned as a kid). I dont plan on getting these anytime soon though.
