So I got a Popeye and the display sometimes wonks out. Specifically, second to left Bruto, the plank under him, and the swordfish disappear sometimes when opening the screen.
It 99.9% of the time will display him just fine when I open it all the way until it snaps open.
Should I return this or keep it?
Would some contact cleaner help clear up the display? I read some related topics about cleaning or repositioning the ribbon cable to fix this.

So I found out Panoramas are sometimes subject to this problem.
The game uses a double ribbon cable system that uses the case design to put pressure on the ribbon cables to contact onto the PCB.
Taking the cable off and rubbing the terminals with contact cleaner helped. Do not get contact cleaner on the ribbon cable as it can corrode or remove the dark grey traces on the ribbon cable which are used to send the signal to the LCD.
Putting a few pieces of masking tape on the risen part of the case that presses down on the ribbon cable helped.
This is all behind the mirror by the way. Behind the mirror is a PCB, you unscrew that and the ribbon cable is behind the PCB.
Next, I noticed that there was some flickering going on still when I opened the screen up. Not complete disappearance, but it was a bit alarming.
The problem here is the ribbon cable going against the LCD screen. I open up the LCD compartment, cleaned the LCD terminals with contact cleaner, then I put pieces of tape on the rubber piece that is between the 2 ribbon cables that presses the ribbons against the LCD.
I screwed it back together and the flickering problem is gone. No more disappearing or flicking characters after cleaning and securing the ribbon cable.
The problem is that the design lets the ribbon cable slip a bit. That also allows for potential crud to get into the terminals and make the contact iffy especially when opening the screen causes movement in the cables.
I suggest doing the tape steps to reinforce the ribbon cable, and if that doesn't fix it, use rubbing alcohol or contact cleaner on the PCB terminals and LCD terminals.
Hope this helps anyone that might run into this problem.

Great write up and information, thanks for that. I have 2 Panoramas with displays that glitch sometimes but these are my least favourite to take apart!

I have 2 Panoramas with displays that glitch sometimes but these are my least favourite to take apart! cNp If they dim/flicker it's probably the LCD compartment. If they completely disappear then it's probably the middle section with the mirror. The panorama units' ribbons don't seem to be as secure as, say the multiscreen. I suggest doing the tape part first. Some of the characters aren't as strong as before after using cleaning solution, but they show up just fine when the screen is open all the way. (Basically they look a little faded at a certain angle, as in angles of the screen not being open all the way)
