Oct 29, 03 - 6:27 AM Serial Numbers?
HI
On the first issued boxes, there is a serial number on the flap of the box, and a serial number on the back of the game. Obviously if you look, you will see the numbers do not match up. Do you know the conection between the two?

Hi Matt,
I know this has been talked about before but I don't think anyone had a conclusive answer.
My boxed Purple Judge has the serial: 0177229 on the end flap of the box, and the game itself has the serial number: 01772290 (as you can see, exactly the same except the last "0").
There's a lot a boxes who's serial number do not match the game and I don't think it's all due to the games being swopped around in the past. It could be due to the packaging stage at the factory where maybe the boxes were meant to match the games but due to late batches or lazy employees this did not happen in all cases???
Later release boxes don't have serial numbers on them.
Cheers

QJ,
Game & Watch games are not relevantly new, so there is probally not many new topics we can talk about. Although there are many new collectors like myself who are unaware of some of this information. I guess it's always good to restate one's opinion. Thanks for answering my question. Anyway You say you have judge that matches up with it's box, but do you have any other games that match up? I already have a few first edition boxes and none of them match up. So considering the possible mixup from the company, does it make a particular game and box worth more? It is something that should be considered when collecting.
P.S. QJ, Do you have a website about Game & Watch?

Hi All,
In my opinion the boxnumbers and the serialnumbers on the game initially matched, when leaving the factory/store. I don't think factoryemployees mixed them up. It's more likely that owners/collectors mixed them up in the years gone by. A not so mint game in a mint box would easily have been replaced by a mint game. I don't have the illusion that my boxes and games really belong to eachother. Do you?
All the best,
sAner
Ps-Tonight I'll check all my first edition boxes and their games on matching numbers. Strangely I haven't checked them all yet. I'll tell you about it tomorrow!

Update-
Non of my boxnumbers match the gamenumbers. My Popeye widescreen (PP-23)comes close though. The number on the box is 31025063 and the s/n of the game is 10250623.
Who can solve this problem!?

I've been meaning to write something about that in my FAQ but I'm puzzled about this as you are. I agree with Pieter that originally serial numbers must have matched. The problem is that I can think of a few reasons why some games' serials don't match with the ones on the boxes:
1. Some unsold items were returned to Nintendo only to be shipped again to other shops in new boxes.
2. Damaged/Faulty items were returned to Nintendo only to be repackaged and sold again.
3. Some items or boxes were destroyed during the manufacturing process so they had to be replaced with other items/boxes.
4. Assembly line errors (during the manufacturing process again) could also have caused this (mismatching the games with the boxes).
Exeperienced collectors might have noticed that a lot of NIB first edition games sold in Ebay have this "mismatching" problem. And that's why it's so puzzling..

Hi Southbomb,
I do have my own website, it's main purpose though is to list my collection, click the link here
I think it's hard to say if having a box and game with matching serial numbers is worth more. From my own view, I'm more interested in a box and game that are as mint as possible
I don't seem to have any other G&W's that match with the box. One thing that does seem maybe slightly interesting is that a couple of my widescreen boxes start with "800" in the serial numbers, I get the feeling it's like a batch number. If you look closely at the numbers you can tell it's not one complete number (the numbers are not in a straight line), but actually two or more numbers stamped next together to make up an 8 digit number. My Mickey Mouse box is the worst, the numbers are clearly not in a line and it looks like 3 different sets of numbers "400 61 300" (it has the spaces between the sets of numbers).

Honestely if you think about this matter, you get puzzled. If Nintendo really did intend on matching the numbers, then a collector should presumaly run into many more matching boxes. The chances of someone having so many games and none of them match up is slim if the company intended to match them. In my opinion, I think the boxes were never meant to match up and were simiply numbered. If someone does have a matching box and game then it is probally just a coninsidence. I am sure many people probally purchased a game from it's original collector. So by then saying, the game was never second handed and no switch could have been made.
