Hey all I am going to enter a photo competition where the goal is to enter a photo that has benefitted the most from digital manipulation. I have a shortlist of 4 images and wanted some opinions from anyone about the best one. Please look at this flash movie (2mb - takes a few seconds to fully load) and press 'switch' to see the before and after photos. Click hereLet me know what you think Thanks in advance! Andy

Andy, I like the last two ones the most, the lion and the couple but the lion one is too dark imho and the couple photo seems to have been sharpened a bit too much (it could be the result of converting it to a flash movie, I don't know). I'm sure Pieter can help you a bit more!

I think the lion's the strongest change. The wedding couple's a close second but knowing Photoshop, it feels like more work would have gone into the lion.

Hi Andy,
I already mailed you, but here we go again:
I think the wedding picture benefitted the most from PP work. Here's why I think that one has benefitted the most, by far! At first sight the Lion and Windmill pictures seem to have changed the most after PP work, but in reality you just warmed up the colors and most likely changed the white balance and adjusted exposure and maybe adjusted the contrast. Nothing major when you think about it; a few secs rather than minutes really. The high key picture of Olivia is also one of my fav pictures and I think the end result is really great. You altered a lot in this picture, but I think the wedding picture is more subtle and more traditional when it comes to pp work. You cropped the picture to make the compo better, you blurred the background, made it a b/w picture and now it's a perfect picture. From a not so special picture you pp-ed it into a perfect picture and that's why I choose that one. I asked Sandra and like me she also chose the wedding picture (and I didn't tell her what my fav was). My colleagues were more impressed by the Lion and the Windmill but that's because they don't know anything about RAW conversion, warming up colors and changing white balances, and how easy that is.
Regards, Pieter

Probably due to the (short) studies I've made in photo and the interest I have in Doisneau's work, I've voted for the couple (although I feel that the guy is a little bit too on the point of laughing ;D).
I like the (re)composition of the picture, the blurred effect and the b/w correction that gives the "art" touch missing on the original.
But if the main criteria is the time spent on the picture, I shall agree with Bugula : I guess this image has not been the hardest to produce (this is said without any intention to deny your work, of course).
Anyway, congrats to you. I'm so often bored to work on my pictures. Great job !

Thanks for the replies. Actually, the wedding couple probably took longer than all the others. Getting the background properly blurred without affecting the foreground was pretty tricky.

I knew that as I have tried to blur the bg in pictures like that often enough and always think it's a very tough job! I am sure the members of the jury will also appreciate that. Later! Pieter

I also voted for the couple because of the result. I assume they all take you (lot of) work but the couple give the best 'pro' rendering. Composition is great. Nice work man... and remember... photoshop is nothing compared to imagination. If you think it photoshop would surelly be able to make it Mike
