Hi guys, What's been going on while I've been "away" - any new rarities, or stuff like that? I've started my new job, and am very quickly learning the mantra that "retail would be fun, if it wasn't for the customers!" ;D (I'm now managing a Music Shop that sells classical CDs and printed music, for anyone that doesn't know...) Thing is, I'm getting worse and worse spam on my d**n guestbook (which no-one visits anyway) : www.gameandwatchnow.com/guestbook.phpAny ideas on how I can make it harder for people to leave pointless crap like they are doing? Are there any sites that offer a basic "php" login thingy? I realise that I can only put up obstacles, rather than blocking the crap altogether. If I can't find a solution that manages the problem, I will just close the guestbook, and that will be problem "solved" I'd appreciate your thoughts, you php-ers out there! BTW - I didn't actually code my site, but I can provide it in text-format for anyone who is interested (and that I trust)

Well, this is a common know problem... If I would be you I would close down the guestbook and use a guestbook-software with registering/login feature. This will make some people not to write into your guestbook, but those who really want to leave a message will do anyway. Or at least check for a security update for the software you are using now. Edit: Another way: Use a software where you first must confirm new entries before they are displayed. This will not prevent spamscam, but you can delete those entries before they are online. Patrick PS: I do know some PHP, but I'm not a real PHP programmer

another easy way to stop spam is using a captcha tool... Try google with "captcha" and "php" captcha are the little pictures that are generated dynamically when loading the page and that no bot or automatic program could handle when spamming...

Hi fans,
Just to let you know - I asked my web guy to disable the guestbook. It seems the simplest solution, as any other alternative requires work on my part!
Still interesting to read the contributions, though, so thank you :mexican:

Just noticed this thread and got the same problem on my website. In the first place, everything was fine, but now I get about one spam a day on my guestbook ... So I have to clean up my guestbook regularly ...

Well, this is a common problem of many guestbooks....
Lately, many spamming attacks did happen. On guestbooks and on many contact forms. For example, here in Switzerland most providers do not allow to use the formmail from Matt's script archive anymore since this CGI programm has more than one security hole...
A good idea is to use a captcha tool as Mike suggested.

I had to disable the guestbook because I got more and more spams, from 1 spam a day, I'm now at more than 10 a day... I will try the "captcha php" advice and let you know if I find something handy and efficient... *update1* Cannot make the captcha work on my website... Too bad, I'll have to leave my guestbook closed for the moment. *update2* It doesn't work because only php is enabled on my website and captcha requires the GD library to be enabled as well.... Nevertheless it works fine locally on my PC using EasyPHP.

I had security issues on some websites (Coded in ASP and ASP.Net) and i found some code easy to use that do not use spécialised library. Mike

Thanks MDB for the info, I indeed found another captcha that doesn't require GD library... I'll try and implement it on my website sometime. *update* I've decided to find another solution and use the same method and script as the one used for people to contact me (as I never got any spam to my email address). Moreover I can validate the content of the message before updating my guestbook, which is good. Finally I don't expect to have too much posts anyway so I can update my guestbook manually. PS: If you want to sign it feel free to do so!
