Oh well..... as soon as it went to penalties I think Englands fate was set.
It's just annoying that they should have won in normal time. Campbell's goal in the last minute was perfectly good, but the keeper falls over after the ball is in the net and the referee gives a free kick.
Not to mention the number of times Figo and Ronaldo took a dive looking for free kicks. So much for being booked for diving. Dodgy favourable home town decisions.
Roll on The 2006 World Cup where England once again lose on penalties; 17-16 in the semi final to Australia who then go on to beat Scotland 7-0 in the World Cup final.

I'm sporting a rather large hangover this morning after drowning my sorrows. Yet again we were robbed of the game by the ref. it was a perfectly good goal in the dieing minutes! that said i still don't understand Sven's obsession with bringing on subs. we were wining and controlling the game and he brings on PIP Neville, I am totally confused Did he not learn from the France game! I know he is not a bad manager, but if he can’t learn from his mistakes what is the point of him staying incharge. He’ll get away with it because of the ref!! I think a large portion of blame should be on his shoulders. I am a very angry man at this moment. Go on the Dutch!!!! PS Mr Beckham, we can only have blind faith for so long, it’s about time you repaid it with a good performance! Neal

What a drama!! Of course I am not the most objective person in the world because -as I said earlier- I am a HUGE England fan, but the ref ROBBED England! Man! What was wrong with Campbell's goal!? NOTHING!!! The refs are slowly becoming a disgrace for the tournament ... I am also agreeing on the fact that the substitutes for England changed the game for the worse for England. Man, why do the managers of the teams I support make such stupid substitutions? England had to play with a lot of defensive players for 40 minutes because of Sven! And what about the fact Rooney fell out? Noone talked about that ... I think if Rooney could have played until the end, England would have won 1-2 or 1-3. S H I T happens! Regards, sAner

I'm sorry for the England supporters. Both team played well (the last minutes was quite crazy).
What you say about Campbell goal is interesting. You have to keep in mind that English football league has "its own rules" (more contacts, goal keeper less protected...).
On french TV last night, Arsene Wenger (coach of arsenal) said that if Campbell would have score the same way in England, the goal would have been OK.
You're right about Rooney, maybe I could put the fire in the last minutes...
Anyway, it's cool for Portugal, playing at home, to be qualified.

Hmm.. I watched the match and Campbell's goal over and over again. Referee is right. I think you can't be objective because of your sentiments. The camera behind the goalposts shows clearly that another english player (can't remember his name) obstructs the goalkeeper inside the goalmouth with his hands and body in order to prevent him from reaching the ball. Uefa's rules are clear: any contact with the goalkeeper inside the small area around the goalposts is a foul. If you have the option to watch it again, please do so.
I have to admit that the referee and his linesmen were terrible yesterday but they didn't do any major mistakes.. I think Ericsson's choices and his will to defend their goal from the beginning was a mistake.

You're definately right about the latter, Mike! Ericssons subs were not too good ... I wish you all the best for tonight, Mike! And you too Badoshin (and other French g&w-collectors) but I have to cheer for Hellas tonight! sAner

Yes, people are still up and celebrating (it's now 3:05 am here). I think most of them are just overreacting but I guess they need that. I would do the same only if we win the tournament! (highly unlikely!) Michael

Please don't get me wrong, I believe that Greece are 900% deserved winners but I think that this tournament again shows that the English league forces too many players to play too many games. Thierry Henry is the best stiker in the world but he was nowhere! It is no coincidence that both England and France are out given that they all practically play in the Premiership!

Up the Orange!!!! ;D That was another great penalty shootout. The first one the dutch have won in 5 attempts! This was a game between two nice teams and it was a shame to see either go out. For some reason I think the Netherlands have got their name on this championship? Let's see. Paul

Southgate 96 Vassell 04 Mellberg 04
The Aston Villa curse strikes again; their players should be banned from taking penalties.

NEVER! NEVER EVER DO THE DUTCH WIN IN THE PENALTY SHOOTOUT!! 1992 -- Van Basten misses! 1996 -- Seedorf misses! 1998 -- Cocu misses and many more miss! 2000 -- Almost all Dutch player miss amongst them is Kluivert. But finally, finally, finally ... we proceed on penalties! PHEW!! Let's hope this is Van the Man's tournament!
A slightly drunk and very orange sAner ;D
