Gentlemen, and ladies,
As most of you are well aware, the latest discussions on white Supercolour games have been very intriguing. I don't remember the last time there was this much excitement on the forum!!! I mean, with every single serial number we get, we end up getting that much closer to explaining things like number of units actually sold, as well as serial ranges for releases such as White SS/CG games, NOA versions, and even CGL releases.
Well, I've had some discussions with Mike, and we've come to the conclusion that we really should try to create a serial database for all games, not just the two Supercolour games that I'm currently working on. I think this is a great idea, and have already volunteered my services to help out with this project, but, it really is a huge job, and I can't do it alone! I think it would require at least 4 people (depending on how the games get divvied up) and it would really require a lot more participation from current collectors in the sense that we would need them to provide us with the serial numbers of the games they currently own.
Here are my thoughts on how the games can be divvied up:
Supercolour, Gold and Silver games - Aris
Multi Screen (calendar type) games - 1 or 2 volunteers
Wide Screen games - 1 or 2 volunteers
New Wide Screen and Crystal Screen games - 1 volunteer
Tabletop, Panoramic, Multi Screen (book type) & MVS - 1 volunteer
I think this is probably as even as the games can be divided up without splitting up lines like MVS, Crystals or book-type Multi Screen games. Depending on how many people would be interested in helping with this project, we may even be able to break down some of the larger groups (Multi Screen calendar type and Wide Screen) into two so two people can work on them divided up alphabetically like MS games A - L for one person and MS games M - Z gets handled by another person. Same with the Wide Screens. So, in the end, it would look like this:

So, what do you guys think? It's actually 6 people (besides me) we would need working on this. The hardest/most time consuming part will be the beginning, when you're trying to input all the data available, after that, it's simply just a matter of inserting serials as you find them on the various auctions sites, or as they're provided to you by various collectors. I can also help out with serials on ebay as I tend to watch a lot of different auctions.
The important thing to keep in mind, is, the longer this takes to get set up, the fewer serials we will have in our databases, as auctions are ending every single day, and once an item sells, that serial will more than likely be long gone! Unless of course, it ends up being purchased by a collector that's on Mike's forum, AND, that collector actually provides us with the serial number!
Like I mentioned earlier, there's a lot of information we can obtain from maintaining a serial number database. Our goal wouldn't be to get every single serial number produced, as we all know, that would be impossible (especially since I'm sure there are thousands of games that have been destroyed, thrown out, had their serial numbers removed, etc.... ) but, just by getting a few, like I have done with the Gold and Silver games I started working on this weekend, I've already established a pattern for CGL (UK) releases. These games are easy to identify b/c they all have CGL stamped on them, and I can now tell if a serial number has been switched from a Silver or Gold game based on this finding.
Now, don't flood my inbox (or this thread....) all at once with desperate desires to be a volunteer for this project! But, I will say this, first come, first serve, in terms of which "GROUP" you get to work on, if you do want to be a volunteer!
