I think they're interesting indeed. I would love to own one or even a few.
Do we know when they were manufactured?

Hmm, very nice! It would be great if the games were playable, too! I saw the first auction too and at first I thought that the seller had glued keychains on regular games! ;D Michael

I posted the G&W Keyholders auction on ebay, so I'll try to answer the questions for collectors here. The Game & Watch keyrings were just released this month in Japan by the BanPresto company, and they are made in China. These prizes are available in video arcades in Japan and you have to win the prizes to actually get them - they are not for sale. The prizes are available in a crane game/UFO catcher kinds of game which you probably have seen before in video arcades in your countries, but not nearly with the variety that are available here in Japan. Usually the prizes are only available for a limited time, or until they are all gone. There are only 3 Game & Watch keyrings in the set - Fire, Manhole and Octopus. The other 3 keyrings in the set are for the original Gameboy, the Gameboy Advance (purple) and the Gameboy Advance SP (Silver, with opening cover). I'm not so interested in the other 3 keyrings in the set, but they are quite well made too. I'll try to post some higher resolution pictures of the games on my website and on ebay for those who want to see them. They really are quite nice!

It's when they start putting copies of the BOXES on keychains that we should get really worried eh? (I am referring back to a previous heated "discussion" on counterfeit G&W boxes/instructions etc.. ;D) For all you UK G&Wers: Apparently (and I swear this is true) the high street shop "NEXT" are selling G&W keyrings for £8.99. I say "apparently" because my wife told me she had seen some and nearly bought one for my Christmas stocking, but then thought I wouldn't want them because they are not functional games. But if it's true (and I generally believe my wife) - isn't that an interesting coincidence! Oh, and all the text was definitely in english, she said...... Had a quick look on their website. The answer, perhaps....? order.next.co.uk/page.asp?b=G47&p=158&o=2She claims to have seen "super mario bros" and "donkey Kong (orange multiscreen)" ones so........ Some more detective work is in order methinks..

The keyrings that are on the NEXT website are the MiniClassics games. Those are functional games and are also about 2-3 times larger than the BanPresto keyholders in the pics above. The MiniClassics games have been around for a few years, whereas the BanPresto games just came out in Japan this month. I think the chances of the BanPresto keyholders being sold at NEXT is quite unlikely.
As an interesting sidenote, none of the MiniClassics games are available for sale in Japan. The only MiniClassics games that I have seen in Japan are imported from the U.S. and Europe and cost nearly double what they do in other countries.

Jon, your missus is correct with the Next mini classic key ring games.
When I was in our local Next store a couple of days ago I saw them, there's only 2 (Super Mario & DK Jr) they are not in the usual Stadlbauer blister packaging but in Next box packaging (black & silver).

Quite suprising those keyrings sold for so much!! $46 US for some keyrings which don't function at all is MAD!! Then again, This MXS charactor is a swifty one, as he has had roughly 4 accounts of his suspended from eBay. When he gets suspended, he just creates another one the same day!.
