Update 9/1/06: The words Exalt and Smite have been replaced with the words Bless and Condemn respectively.
Most of you must have already noticed that a new feature has been added to this version of Proboards: Karma.
Karma is a kind of a grading system based on each person's view of any user's behaviour, actions or attitude. It is measured in points and can be negative, zero or positive. All users start with zero Karma.
An overall negative karma score doesn't mean that user should be treated as an outcast! Far from it! Since Karma grading is based on each person's view of another person and there will always be likes and dislikes, various users may have negative karma in the future. But this score doesn't show the overall "quality" of a person or whether he's evil or not!! As I wrote, far from it! People with negative karma shouldn't be treated differently whatsoever.
I'm going to list a few guidelines on using Karma so that we will all benefit the most from this feature. The following are not board rules so you may circumvent them although I strongly advise you not to.
1. Use Exalt to give someone positive Karma and Smite to give him negative. Please think it through before proceeding as some people might take Karma score very seriously regardless of what I wrote here. So it's best not to give someone negative Karma based on a sole experience. Give him/her some time before going through with the grading.
2. You may give Karma to any user, including moderators, administrators etc. I suggest you do it only once for each user. It's a lot more reliable this way. I have a way of checking which user gives which user karma so if I find out that people are making deals on exchanging big scores of Karma I will change their Karma to negative!
3. Don't use Karma as a guide on dealing with a person. One thing that the feedback system in Ebay has taught me is that it can be very unreliable. Same thing with Karma.
4. You can only give someone Karma once every hour. I say again, please grade each user once!
5. People who regularly contribute to this board will get positive Karma from me. On the other hand, people who will try to abuse people or this board in general will get negative Karma. I will try to be as objective as possible.
If you think there's something I should add or change, let me know.
