Devster, Should be Up & Down. Sounds reasonable eh? Credit must go to Torsten though. And BU (Spitball Sparky) .... --> Blow Up. sAner

Nah, "Balls up" I reckon ;D and UD *must* be "utterly dull" if the gameplay is anything to go by. Ooh, controversial

This was a fun thread until noone posted to it anymore. We've got some new members since then (and lost a few ...), so why don't we try again. You must have some fresh ideas! What does the YM mean in the modelnumers of the mariobros games? Regards, Pieter

The crystal screen version was made in 1986, special edition in 1987, and new wide in 1988, right?
If the special edition version released before either, then it could very well be Yellow Mario, but it was released second.
Perhaps Nintendo had the idea to do a competition for a Game & Watch before the first one was released, and they came up with Yellow Mario (Or YM) since the Game & Watch that would be the prize was yellow itself.
Then, when the Crystal screen version was released in 1986, they just decided to stick with the acronym YM for the game...
Well, I don't know. I'm not very creative at all.

Well, that actually sounds like a good explanation! It could well be true. Thanks for the input Liam. Regards, Pieter

Almost a decade has passed, so I thought it would be nice to bring this thread up. Any new ideas on what YM stands for in the model numbers of the Mario games?

Yellow Mario. Other people suggested that too, but what about the games that aren't Yellow (YM801 & YM105)?

Seems a lot like quessing to me too. But what does this book say about the YM in the three Mario games?
