Hello Eveyone!
As a new collector I am still puzzled about different things. My question today is: How many Special Game & Watch games were awarded duing the contest. Some websites say 10,000 and others say 11,790. Do any of you guys know the true number?
Michael,
I read your Q&A page and you stated that 11,790 games were awarded during the four contests. Do you have any proof to back of this number? Also You stated that the game was awarded in the four contests. I read on a few other websites that the Special Game & Watch prize was only awarded in the F-1 Famicom contest. Supposedly different prices were given out in the other 3 contests. I believe it was a Famicom Gold disk and a school pencil set in a yellow Famicom holder like the one from the special Game & Watch. Any information will help! Thanks, Southbomb

Southbomb, in my FAQ I state that only the winners of the F1 Race competition were awarded this prize. The amount of games given as awards were 11,790 as stated in numerous sites by well known collectors. I have no way to verify this (or many other things for that matter) of course since Nintendo support won't answer such questions/don't know the answers. In my opinion, I don't think Nintendo made a round number of games..

Sorry Michael
I didn't thoroughly read your page. Presuming you received your information from another collector, it's probabaly that a chain reaction occured creating a false number.(The world may never know) Anyway, would you consider the other prizes of that contest part of your Game & Watch collection. How much does the other prizes go for? Also does anyone know how many of the other prizes were given out?
P.S. Do any of you guys have the other prizes?

Hey Southbomb, hey all!
I agree with Michael that Nintendo did probably not hand out an exact round number of prizes. That seems highly unlikely.
The number 11.790 is the number I've heard of. To me it seems again highly unlikely that someone made this number up (because it's such a strange number) and then a chain reaction occured. It's more likely that some people rounded the number down to 10.000 copies as that's a very round number.
I personally don't consider the other prizes as g&w-related, as it has nothing to do with g&w's. The YM-901 has it's own modelnumber and should therefore be a part of a complete collection.

HI
I agree with you that the Special serie is part of the Game & Watch collection, as the game does say Game & Watch on the back. Also the relationship of the model number backs that theory up. Usually in contests they hand out a very rounded numbers of the items. So it can be presumed that nintendo gave out 10,000 games and possibly kept the rest. It is very unlikely that the company will produce a very special model and will hand out every copy made. You would think the company would save some games for themselves. It is very possible that there might be a box of old Game & Watch games in the closet of nintendo's headquarters. As far as the other gifts given out, It would be nice to have those items, but it will not fit into a Game & watch collection.
*Maybe someone in Japan can break into Nintendo's headquarters to back up our information?(Just kidding)

Matt, Nintendo (the company) doesn't think the way an individual does.. Every single unsold game is a loss and in general big companies don't manufacture items if this doesn't serve a purpose (in this case fame, most of the times, money)! Even if they made extra items, these items must have been given away to employees or whatever..

Michael,
I completely understand what you are saying. I agree with you companys do not want to produce large amounts of products that they have no use for. Probally the leftovers were handed out to workers in Nintendo. It makes you think though, If you had a company wouldnt you save at LEAST one to display somewhere. You wouldnt just want your work to disappear forever.

Hmm.. if I had a small company, probably yes.. Large companies don't care about such stuff. They're too busy trying to earn a profit. How many companies that have something like a museum (so that they can display their history) do you know ? I know only a few..

Michael,
You really like to debate don't you?
To tell you the truth I have never really explored large company factory's. So to answer your question, I don't know any companies who have done that. If a company was to produce lets say thousands of different products in a few years, then the probability of the company keeping at least one of everything is slim. A company who manufactures electronic items, I would think they would showcase some of there past work. You know you can do some research to find out the truth behind my question. Mostly the museums are started from customers like ourselves who become fascinated with companies products.
